Conway & Latham share 323-run opening stand for NZ

Devon Conway and Tom Latham produced a monumental opening partnership to put New Zealand firmly in control on the opening day of the third Test against the West Indies at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. The pair shared a commanding 323-run stand, one of the finest opening partnerships in New Zealand’s Test history, as the hosts dominated the bowling attack from start to finish.
After winning the toss, New Zealand captain Tom Latham elected to bat on a flat surface, and the decision paid immediate dividends. Conway and Latham showed patience early on, negotiating the new ball with discipline before steadily increasing the scoring rate. Once settled, both batters capitalized on loose deliveries and punished anything overpitched or short, forcing the West Indies bowlers into long, unproductive spells.
Latham led from the front with a composed and authoritative innings. He brought up his century with a mix of solid defence and elegant stroke play, particularly strong through the off side. The skipper eventually fell for 137, dismissed late in the day, but not before laying a massive platform for his team. It was his 15th Test hundred and another reminder of his reliability at the top of the order.
Conway, at the other end, was equally impressive and remained unbeaten on 178 at stumps. He batted fluently for long periods, rotating the strike effectively and punishing bad balls with ease. His calm presence ensured New Zealand never lost momentum, even after Latham’s dismissal.
The 323-run partnership is New Zealand’s second-highest opening stand in Test cricket and the highest ever achieved on home soil. It is also the largest opening partnership in World Test Championship history, underlining the significance of the achievement.
By the close of play on Day 1, New Zealand reached 334 for 1, firmly on top of the contest. With Conway still at the crease and plenty of batting depth to come, the hosts are well positioned to post a huge first-innings total and apply early pressure on the West Indies as the match progresses.
